Exam pattern — Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)
Section B now has five compulsory numerical questions per subject — there are no optional questions any more. Negative marking of −1 applies to wrong numerical answers too, which it did not when the section was optional. And no virtual calculator is provided at exam centres: every calculation is done on the rough paper supplied there.
Who can appear
| Criterion | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Class 12 | Passed in the last two years, or appearing this year |
| Age limit | None |
| Attempts | Three consecutive years from the year of passing Class 12 — two sessions each year, so six in total |
| Subjects | Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject |
There is no minimum Class 12 percentage required to appear in JEE Main. The 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD), or a top-20-percentile board rank, is required for admission to an NIT, IIIT or CFTI. Students lose a year to this confusion every cycle.
