What the ZEST paper is actually testing

ZEST is set on the syllabus of the class a student is currently in, not the one they are entering. It is not an aptitude test and there is nothing to cram for it — the paper is deliberately built so that a student who understands their own year's work can walk in without special preparation.

What it does test is whether that understanding survives contact with an unfamiliar question. The problems are objective and single-correct, but they are set slightly off the angle a school test would take, because the useful information is what a student does when the shape of the question is new.

Which is why the sample paper matters more than revision does. Sitting one tells you the format, the pace and the kind of thinking the paper wants, and it removes the twenty minutes a student would otherwise spend in the hall working out what they are looking at.

The scholarship is tiered on score alone, so there is no advantage to any particular class, programme or application date. Sit the sample, sit the real one, and let the paper decide.

Which sample paper do I need?
The one matching the class you are moving into — Class VIII to IX, IX to X, X to XI in either the JEE or NEET stream, XI to XII, or Class XII pass for the dropper batch.
Will the real paper be the same?
Same format, same style of question, different questions. The point of the sample is that the format stops being a surprise.
Is there a sample for Class 8?
Yes — the Class VIII to IX paper. Class 8 students do sit ZEST, even though the programmes start at Class IX; ask a mentor whether to join now or wait a year.
